In the healthcare setting, a potential lack of communication and conflict exists between leaders in finance and nursing because neither side can communicate clearly to each other. In addition to communication, business education is essential for successful interaction between clinical leaders and finance. Many nurse managers began their career as bedside nurses. When they excelled at that role, they were promoted into a management position with very little training or support from other managers or the administration. The focus of this descriptive correlational, quantitative study is to determine if nursing leaders in Florida who work in a hospital setting with a 2-year nursing degree or BSN degree, lack knowledge in finance, management, and business activities. The theoretical base for this study is based on three theories: the behavioral theory, the adult learning theory, and the participative theory. A quantitative analysis will be conducted using a valid questionnaire created by the researcher and validated by a team of experts in nursing and business fields. The research questions will identify if effective communication exists between nursing leaders and subordinates, coworkers, and administration; do nurses with a 2-year nursing degree lack knowledge in finance, management, and business activities; and do nurses with a Bachelor’s in nursing lack knowledge in finance, management, and business activities? This research will assist in determining the need for finance and management training in nursing schools or in the hospital setting.
